GEHRIMED: A Cloud-based EHR Solution
A 10-week summer internship at Netsmart , tasked with designing and creating an optimized scheduling application for health practitioners.
GEHRIMED, is a cloud-based mobile EHR solution specifically designed for practitioners within the long-term and post-acute medical care industry (LTPAC).

What I learned
Healthcare UX Design: Bridging Industry Specifics with User-Centric Innovation
This summer exposed me to design in the healthcare industry and how the application of UX differed when compared to other industries. Designing in the healthcare industry forced me to understand the specifics of the medical sector and how medical staff interacted with the systems, in particular EHRs (Electronic Health Records).
As a healthcare UX Engineer, it was important for me to understand the goals and desired calls-to-action of the client, and finding ways to meet those goals while also advocating for the user. This included working to improving efficiency for hospital workers, enhancing the training experience for doctors, and streamlining the appointment booking process for patients. Moreover, it was important for me to design a consistent, reliable, and accessible user experience across mobile devices and desktop platforms.
Enhancing Designs through User Testing and Insights
While most of the designs were done independently, I had also worked collaboratively with a functional analyst and my project manager to understand our user needs through testing and interviews. Bi-weekly, we would hop on a call with a practitioner that was currently using GEHRIMED to gain insights into design improvements, understand the user flow, and understand what changes needed to be done to adequately achieve the user’s need in an efficient manner. Because we were working with technology in healthcare, it was important to keep in mind that the system needed to be easy-to-use and intuitive as many of these practitioners were making the transition from files and papers to digital EHRs.
While most of us are indulged in technology within the e-commerce industry, it was truly a learning experience to see how UX design is shaping the future of healthcare. Being able to work in this industry really emphasized the importance of design and how it also takes care of one’s health, much like a doctor.
